As someone raised as a Christian (although I don’t claim the title now), I find these death threats acutely unsettling. How people can claim to follow the teachings of a man who lived to show love to every person he encountered while spewing hate and violence—including these threats of rape and death—is both baffling and repulsive to me. Most of the Christians I know are kind, loving, and generous (albeit occasionally proselytizing) and I am saddened and sickened to know that they share that descriptor with people who hold such ill will towards so many people simply seeking to have their constitutional rights upheld. In many countries, Christianity is viewed the way these people view Atheism—I have to wonder if they have ever considered the privilege it is to be able to practice their religion without persecution or fear of attack or antagonism by their peers, neighbors, or even their own government. With that in mind, how can they wish such things upon others?
